There are alternatives if you do not want a photo to be taken of your ID card during the delivery of registered mail. You can also have a photo taken of something else that proves who you are. It must always be issued by an official body or agency and it must include your full name and a photo that is clearly recognisable as you. Examples are a passport, a driving licence or a train or bus pass. You can also ask the person delivering to note down your full name and ID card number on the missed delivery notice and take a photo of that. Or ask him or her to hand your registered mail in at the post office of post point. When you go there to pick it up, you will again be asked to allow a photo to be taken of your ID card. You can then ask the person at the counter to note down your full name and ID card number and take a photo of that instead. You can also set up a last-minute mandate in the My bpost app under ‘delivery preferences’. You will receive a QR code you or someone else can use to take receipt of the registered mail item.
ou only need to attach a shipping label on a parcel that you return to a country within the EU. For a parcel that you return to a country outside the EU, you must also provide customs documents. If the original sender doesn't provide a return label, then you can purchase a shipping label via our website, in our eShop or in a Post Office, Post Point or Parcel Point. You do not have to pay any customs fees. Only the receiver of your parcel must pay customs fees, and only for return shipments outside the EU. Contact the original sender to see if he/she offers return options whereby he/she doesn't have to pay customs fees. If he/she does not have such an option, then he/she pays the customs fees that are applicable in his/her country. The customs documents for a return shipment to a country outside the EU: The CN23 part of the shipping label or a CN23 document. That indicates what is in your parcel. You attach the label on the box. The original invoice or pro forma invoice and 3 copies. If the shipment is worth more than €1000, a Single Administrative Document is also required.

You can place your non-standardised letter in one of the many bpost mailboxes. If your envelope doesn't fit in the opening, drop it off in a Post Office.
If you get a parcel that is intended for someone else, then you shouldn't use the return label. Bring the parcel to a Post Office. Tell the counter clerk that the parcel was delivered to the wrong address. We will make sure that it is delivered to the correct address.
Is it better to send urgent mail as registered mail?

Registered mail is not faster than a regular delivery. To have your letter delivered tomorrow, use a Priority stamp and place it in a red mailbox (do that before the last collection) or drop off your letter in a Post Office before 16:00.
We understand how it could be irritating to have to show your ID card every time you receive registered mail. However, under the postal law ( see Royal Decree of 14 March 2022 – Chapter 2 Article 9. § 1 ) our delivery and counter staff have an obligation to check your identity and to take a photo of an official document confirming your identity. That is because registered mail has legal value. We therefore need to check your proof of identity to verify your identity, so we can be certain that the mail has been handed to the right person.

, Have registered mail delivered straight to your letterbox
, You can also have your registered mail delivered straight to your letterbox without having to sign for it. You can activate this option in the My bpost app (as a delivery preference) or at a Post Office or Post Point – upon presentation of your ID card. You authorise bpost to deliver registered mail straight to your letterbox and you will no longer need to show your ID card or even be home at the time of delivery.
It is best to contact our customer service via the online form at the bottom of this page and keep your mailing receipt ready. We start an investigation in collaboration with the foreign post operator that handled your shipment.

, The postman will deliver the registered mail in accordance with the delivery preferences the addressee might have set in his My bpost app. If he has not set any delivery preferences, the postman will leave a failed delivery notice. The addressee can use this to pick up the item in the Post Office or Post Point mentioned on the failed delivery notice; the item must be collected within 15 calendar days. Only the addressee or those with a postal mandate from the addressee can accept registered mail. The item is only delivered after signing for receipt and checking the ID card of the addressee or postal proxy. The sender determines who the item must be handed over to. If the addressee does not pick up your mail within 15 calendar days, it will be sent back to you. Make sure that your name and address are clearly written on the item.
