Send a parcel to the United States

Temporary suspension of parcels to the United States

Since 23 August 2025, you can no longer send parcels or postal items containing goods to the United States.
The US government has changed its customs regulations, but it is not yet clear how these rules should be applied. That’s why we are currently unable to process these shipments.

What is still possible?

You can continue to send letters and documents without goods to the US.

What is bpost doing?

We are working closely with our international partners on a solution so that you can send parcels to the US again as soon as possible. This situation is the result of new US regulations and is entirely beyond our control.

Perhaps you still have one of these questions

From 23 August 2025, you can only send shipments without goods (e.g. a letter or contract) to the US.

What can no longer be sent?

You can temporarily not send goods to the US via bpost, including:

  • letters containing goods
  • registered shipments with goods
  • all parcels (such as Economy and Standard) with goods

From 29 August 2025, the US government will change its import rules. For every shipment with goods, import duties must be prepaid, regardless of value. Despite the guidance published by the US, there is still much uncertainty regarding critical elements and processes on how payment must be made, which is why bpost cannot process these shipments for now. That’s why we will temporarily stop sending goods to the US on 23 August.

This measure comes from the US government and applies to all postal companies worldwide, not only bpost.

The interruption will last until the US government has fully announced all details of the new import rules, and our systems are adapted accordingly. We are closely monitoring the situation. Once more details are known, we will inform you via our channels (website, app, FAQs, etc.).

The US government has decided that from 29 August 2025, import duties for all shipments with goods must be prepaid, regardless of value. At this time, this is not yet possible because the US has not provided details of the procedure.

We are therefore in a temporary transition: as long as there is no clarity, bpost cannot correctly process shipments with goods to the US.

Who will pay the import duties?

The sender will prepay the import duties before the shipment leaves for the US. The recipient will not need to pay anything on delivery.

How will the duties be calculated?

Exact rates are not yet known. Costs will depend on:

  • the type of goods
  • the value of the shipment
  • the country of origin of the goods

Can I pay duties later?

No. If the duties are not prepaid, the parcel will not be accepted for transport to the US.

Shipments with goods that arrive in the US before 29 August 2025 will still be processed under the current customs rules. That means no import duties apply for parcels valued up to USD 800. Shipments that do not arrive on time in the US will be returned to the sender.

If you sent a shipment before 23 August and it is returned due to the new import rules, please contact our customer service at 02 201 23 45. Learn more about the new import rules.
